Until another team manages to pry the District 14-1A track trophy from the South Florida HEAT girls, the rising home school program remains the team to beat.

Written off as contenders with only four returnees, the HEAT captured its fifth consecutive district title at the Westminster Academy Sports Complex on Thursday night.

``It was stunning,'' HEAT coach Bob Bemis said. ``We were against most odds. Only three or four had done this before. We had five or six new girls join after the season started. We have about 12 girls now. They are all moving on to regionals.''

Coral Springs Christian, a perennial small-school power, made it look easy, winning theboys' title by amassing 224 points, well ahead of runner-up the HEAT (146).

Kyle Lindbergh proved his versatility, sweeping the discus and shot put titles before leading the Crusaders' 1,600-meter relay team to victory in 3:33.66.

The top four finishers in each event advance to the Region 4-1A championships at Dade Christian School on April 22.

Nobody played a bigger role in the HEAT girls scoring 180 points than Brittany Johnson, one of Bemis' late add-ons. Johnson set three new personal records to advance in the high jump, triple jump, 400 meters and 3,200 relay.

The Crusaders' Tara Fallin had a memorable outing also, winning the 100 hurdles, finishing second in the 100, third in the jump and running on the victorious 400-meter relay team.
